The South American continent, extending from the Caribbean Sea and the isthmus of Panama in the north to the Drake Passage in the south, features the Andes Mountains running down its western spine, a vast tropical rain forest in the northern interior, and vast savannas ranging from eastern Brazil down through Paraguay, Uruguay, and eastern Argentina.  The Patagonian desert and the island of Tierra del Fuego are situated in the southern part of the continent.
